Introduction
Location-based games have grown in popularity as tools for learning. The mobile games provide a hands-on learning environment and are played on smartphones. LBGs can be used as an interactive way where students can learn about a wide range of subjects ranging from geography and history to science and environmental studies. Additionally, users may improve their cooperation and teamwork abilities with the help of real-life educational interaction. Most of the LBGs are pervasive which implies gaming takes place in real-world environments and users can interact with the object around them. Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) can also be termed as one form of location-based game, where the user interacts with real-world objects to perform certain tasks and achieve their desired goal. Nowadays, these technologies are widely popular as people are fascinated by learning and doing their tasks in interesting ways. The same can be said for gaming as well, players want to experience realistic ways to enjoy gaming where they can interact with real-world objects and play as a game character in the real world. Both learning and gaming are the major components of location-based games where learning can be integrated into the game as part of the ecosystem and games can help players to develop their communication skills and promote physical health as well.
Literature Review of Location based games for learning
By definition, Location-based games (LBGs) include gameplay that centers around the players or another object’s physical location (Rashid, et al., 2006). According to (Arango‐López, et al., 2017), the majority of LBGs are also pervasive games i.e. games in which the gaming experience is integrated within or mixed with the real world. In general, LBGs have been recognized as promising platforms for future learning (Söbke, et al., 2017) because of their positive learning outcomes (Chen & Tsai, 2009; LeBlanc & Chaput, 2017). Since LBGs are designed to be playful, they seem to be perfect for serious games (SGs) that teach local geography or encourage exercise.
